 The Peace Studies Scholarship offered by the Kroc Institute, at the University of Notre Dame aims to empower students to become scholars and educators who contribute to the advancement of knowledge and practice in peacebuilding. The scholarship program focuses on addressing violence and alleviating suffering.



Ph.D. Students in Peace Studies have the opportunity to select a partner discipline from a range of options, including anthropology, history, political science, psychology, sociology or theology. This allows them to integrate their studies with disciplines in the humanities and social sciences resulting in a comprehensive educational experience tailored to each students interests.


In addition to the curriculum students also have access to research opportunities both within the Institute and across the University of Notre Dame.

Requirements for the scholarship consideration;


To be eligible, for the scholarship opportunity you need to fulfill the criteria;


To be eligible, for admission to a graduate program at the University of Notre Dame applicants must possess a minimum of a bachelors degree from an institution whether its domestic or international. Additionally it is expected that applicants have training or research experience in the field they are applying for.


While previous graduate work is not mandatory for programs there are exceptions. For instance those interested in Peace Studies and Theology are required to hold a masters degree in theology.


For individuals considering a masters degree in peace studies it would be beneficial to explore the Master of Global Affairs in International Peace Studies program.


Scholarship Coverage


Regarding scholarships all students who are admitted receive support including full tuition coverage, a generous stipend to cover the cost of living expenses in South Bend, health insurance coverage as well as additional funding specifically allocated for conference travel and research activities.


Requirements for the Scholarship


When applying for admission to the Graduate School at Notre Dame applicants need to provide documents. These include a Curriculum Vitae (CV), a statement of intent outlining their objectives and goals a writing sample that showcases their abilities and expertise in the field of study and names and contact information for three individuals who can provide letters of recommendation. Additionally unofficial transcripts from institutions or documentation showing progress, towards degrees should also be submitted.


To apply for the Fall 2023 cycle all applicants except those, in Anthropology and Psychology must submit their General Test scores for the Graduate Record Exam (GRE). International applicants should also provide their TOEFL or IELTS scores.


Application Process;


In your statement of intent which should not exceed 1,000 words please clearly outline your areas of interest and relevant experience. Additionally include a list of faculty members you would like to study with. Both the Kroc Institute Doctoral Admissions Committee and a committee or representative, from the department will review your statement. Please include a discussion of your interest, in the field of peace studies as your interest in the partner department. 


Your writing sample should be an authored piece that showcases your writing, and research skills in the field of peace studies. It should represent your example of writing. If you choose to submit a section from a work, such as a masters thesis please provide an abstract of no more than 250 words summarizing the entire piece and its argument. Writing samples must be written in English.


All applicants are required to complete the Graduate School Application for Admission. Please upload all materials directly to the application; paper submissions will not be accepted for review.
