Scholarship Benefits


The Jefferson Scholars Foundation National Fellowship offers the following advantages to recipients;

  • The Fellow receives a stipend of $25,000 for the duration of the year.
  • They will have access, to an office, stacks, inter library loan privileges, internet access and the opportunity to present their research in the Hagleys seminar series. Additionally they can avail themselves of discounted scholar accommodations provided by Hagley.


Eligibility Requirements


To be considered eligible for the Jefferson Scholars Foundation National Fellowship applicants must meet these criteria;


1. Proficiency in English is required.


2. Candidates from all countries around the world are eligible.


3. Applicants must be Ph.D. Candidates who anticipate completing their dissertation by the end of the Fellowship year. This fellowship is not for doctoral scholars. Non U.S. Citizens are welcome to apply.


4. Each Fellow is expected to participate in two conferences—one in the fall and one in the spring—to share their research and findings with scholars, at both the Jefferson Scholars Foundation and the University of Virginia. The spring conference provides an opportunity for mentors feedback well. All expenses related to attending these conferences will be covered by the Jefferson Scholars Foundation.


5. While it is encouraged but not mandatory for all Fellows to reside at the Jefferson Scholars Foundation the only exception is, for the Jefferson Scholars/Hagley Library Dissertation Fellowship, which requires residence at the Hagley Library during the year. If Fellows choose to be, in residence they will receive a stipend of $1,500 of covering their travel and accommodation expenses for the spring and fall conferences.


6. Regardless of whether they reside on site or not all Fellows are expected to participate and contribute to the interdisciplinary community fostered by the Jefferson Scholars Foundation.


How to Apply 


To apply for this fellowship please adhere to the instructions outlined below;


To complete your application you will need to submit the following materials within the specified word or page limits;


1. Applicant information sheet


2. Project description (limited to 1,200 words) – This should include an explanation of your dissertation or book stating its thesis and discussing how it contributes to existing scholarship. Additionally please describe why you chose this topic.


3. Op-ed or blog post (limited to 750 words) – Provide a published op-ed (, like those found in the New York Times) or a sample op-ed that applies one of your researchs findings to a public policy issue.


4. Bibliography (limited to 3 pages)


5. Curriculum vitae (limited to 2 pages)


6. Writing sample (maximum of 40 pages) – Choose one chapter, from your dissertation. Provide a one page introduction placing it within the project OR submit an accepted/published journal article.


7. You will need to submit two letters of recommendation, for your application with one of them being from your advisor. You can initiate the recommendation process through the application itself. Send the letters directly to the Selection Board at nationalfellows@jeffersonscholars.org.
