The Ontario Graduate Scholarship and the Queen Elizabeth II Graduate Scholarship in Science and Technology (QEII GSST) programs aim to promote excellence in studies at assisted universities in Ontario.
These programs receive funding from both the Ontario government and participating institutions. The government contributes two thirds of the awards value while the university provides the remaining one third.
At Waterloo students can be considered for both the Ontario Graduate Scholarship (OGS) and the Queen Elizabeth II Graduate Scholarship in Science and Technology (QEII GSST) through an application. Both scholarships hold prestige. They have a few differences;
OGS; Available for all disciplines; open to Citizens/Permanent Residents and International students.
QEII GSST; Specifically available for students pursuing research based graduate programs in STEM disciplines (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math); only open to Citizens/Permanent Residents.

Each OGS and QEII GSST scholarship has a value of $15,000, per year.
- The scholarship awarded by Waterloo for achievement, among its graduate students is $5,000 per term available, for either two or three terms. The Presidents Graduate Scholarship (PGS) is offered to those who receive the OGS or QEII GSST and will commence their scholarship during the 2024 2025 year. You can start your scholarship in spring 2024 fall 2024 or winter 2025.
- Awards are given for a period of one year. Cannot be extended. Interested applicants must submit their applications every year to be considered. Those who receive the scholarship can hold it for two terms, which amounts to a total of $10,000 or for a maximum of three terms totaling $15,000. It is not allowed to accept an OGS/QEII GSST scholarship for one term.

- Applicants must have achieved an average (minimum of A /80%) in both of their recent two years of full time study.
- Eligibility averages are determined based on grades obtained in your history up until August 31st, 2023 regardless of the program or its relevance, to your proposed program. Waterloo is obligated to adhere to these guidelines as outlined by the Ontarios Ministry of Colleges and Universities (MCU).
