The Robert S. McNamara Fellowships Program for the years 2024 and 2025 is a funded scholarship designed for students pursuing their PhD studies. Recipients of this scholarship will receive an amount of up to $42,750 per fellow for an 8 month fellowship.


The World Banks Robert S. McNamara Fellowship Program offers fellowships to PhD applicants from developing countries who wish to pursue development related studies under the guidance of a study consultant at an overseas partner organization over a residency period ranging from 6 to 10 months.


Key Features of the Program;


1. Experience; Fellows will have the opportunity to work on World Bank projects under the supervision of World Bank DEC researchers. They will also receive training on research practices and technologies. Actively engage with World Bank operations. Depending on the projects nature they may contribute to DECs published work potentially co author papers with DEC researchers participate in field missions and directly interact with clients.


2. Capacity building; Fellows will undergo one week of onboarding at the beginning of the program, which includes training, on research practices.


During the program fellows will take part in education sessions and events to further develop their skills. Working alongside DEC economists they will strengthen their capacity to recognize, analyze and compose papers, on development policy issues.


3. Dissemination of research; The fellows will have the opportunity to write a blog based on their research during the fellowship collaborating with DEC researchers. This offers a platform to showcase their research and contribute to discussions, on development policies. Each year the top 4 blogs will be published on the DECs Lets Talk Development blog.

Courses Offered; Applicants can choose whether they would like to be hosted by either the Development Research Department or the Impact Evaluation Department within the World Banks Development Economics Vice Presidency (DEC).


Deadline; The application period for the 2023 cohort is now closed. Will reopen on February 1st, 2024 with a deadline of April 30 2024.


Scholarship Coverage;


The Robert S. McNamara Fellowships Program provides recipients with;

  • A total of $42,750 net per fellow for an eight month fellowship (paid in installments).
  • Since fellows will be hosted at the World Bank in Washington D.C. selected candidates will receive assistance from the World Banks HR department for visa applications, through invitation letters.

Note; The fellowship does not cover visa application costs, travel expenses or any other expenses related to bringing and supporting family members.


Eligibility Requirements, for the Robert S. McNamara Fellowships Program


In order to be considered eligible for the Robert S. McNamara Fellowships Program applicants must meet the criteria;


  • Proficiency in English is required.
  • Applicants should be citizens of World Bank WBG member countries with a preference given to individuals from developing nations.
  • Applicants should have completed a masters degree. I am currently pursuing a PhD in Economics or a related field.
  • The maximum age limit for applicants is 35 years (as of June 30th in the year the fellowship commences).
  • Applicants must be available to relocate to Washington, D.C. For the duration of the fellowship.
