The IIE SRF Fellowship for 2024 and 2025 is a funded scholarship designed for students who wish to pursue doctoral research studies. This prestigious scholarship offers a grant of up to US$25,000 along with health insurance coverage to support a visiting academic appointment of up to one year.


Additionally there's the Baden Württemberg Fund that supports visiting research appointments at universities and other higher education institutions in the state of Baden Württemberg. This opportunity allows researchers in the field of liberty and security to continue their work. Eligible researchers include teachers, senior scientists and government intellectuals from any country or academic discipline who are facing targeted threats to their life and/or careers, in their home countries or countries of residence.


In 2002 the trustees of the IIE made a commitment to incorporate rescue scholars as a part of the Institutes mission. Driven by this dedication Dr. Henry Jarecki, Dr. Henry Kaufman and Mr. Thomas Russo established the IIE Scholar Rescue Fund (IIE SRF). 


Ensuring the safety of endangered researchers and students has been a focus of IIEs mission since its establishment, in 1919. Throughout the years from the time of the Bolshevik Revolution to the Hungarian Uprising IIE has consistently demonstrated its commitment, to protecting individuals freedom of thought and their pursuit of knowledge.

Scholarship Coverage Details


The IIE SRF fellowship provides;

  • A grant of up to US$25,000
  • Health insurance coverage for individuals
  • A visiting position that can be renewed for a year lasting up to one year.

The final amount awarded as a fellowship will depend on factors such as the location of the host institution, living expenses and any additional contributions from the host institution or other sources.


Eligibility Criteria for IIE SRF Fellowship


To qualify for the IIE SRF Fellowship applicants must meet the following requirements;

  • Proficiency in English language is required.
  • Applications are open to individuals from all countries around the world.
  • Professors, senior researchers and public intellectuals, from any field or discipline may be eligible.
  • Applications are evaluated based on qualifications, potential of applicants work and the seriousness of threats faced by the applicant.
  • Preference is given to scholars who meet the criteria;

    • Possess a Ph.D. Or the highest degree, in their fields and/or have significant experience, in teaching or conducting research at universities, colleges or other higher education institutions.
    • Are currently. Have recently escaped from specific threats to their lives and professional careers in their home countries or countries of residency.
    • Exhibit achievements and potential.
    • Will contribute positively to both their home communities and the host academic communities.

How to Apply


To apply for the IIE SRF Fellowship please follow the steps;


1. You have the option to either apply directly or have someone else submit your application materials on your behalf. The necessary documents include;


  • Academic statement; Provide a statement, about your academic and professional background and experience.
  • Current CV or resume.
  • Personal statement; Explain thoroughly why you are seeking support from IIE SRF.
  • Two / reference letters from academic / professional; These should come from academic and/or professional colleagues who can speak about your research, publications, teaching or other advanced academic experiences.
  •  Two reference letters; These should come from colleagues or individuals who're aware of the challenges you have faced and are familiar with your professional background. If possible ask them to write their letters on letterhead.
  • A copy of your Ph.D. Or higher degree.
  • Samples of your writing or research publications.
  • (Optional) A letter, from a higher learning institution that could potentially host your fellowship.


2. To complete your application you have the option to send all required documents via email (preferably) fax or regular mail.
