University of British Columbia Scholarship For International Students 2024

The University of British Columbia Scholarship is available, to students who have demonstrated a commitment to making a positive impact in their communities.



UBC being one of the 40 universities globally attracts students from all over the world. Your journey towards UBC begins with an application, where you can find all the information, deadlines and tips to help you present yourself in the best possible way.


Through UBC's International Scholars Program there are four categories of awards based on both need and merit.


When you submit your application you don't need to select an award. Our team will automatically consider you for all awards.


1. Karen McKellin International Leader of Tomorrow Award;


This award recognizes international undergraduate students who excel academically and possess exceptional leadership qualities that contribute to collaboration, empathy and active listening. It acknowledges students who have positively influenced their school and community through service projects and initiatives while also achieving success, in other academic or extracurricular pursuits.


2. Donald A. Wehrung International Student Award;


This award recognizes undergraduate students hailing from impoverished or war torn regions who have achieved academic excellence despite challenging circumstances. These students would not be able to attend university without assistance.


Students should showcase their ability to lead and their dedication, to creating an influence, in their communities.


3. International Impact Award


The International Impact Award recognizes students who have shown leadership and dedication to addressing issues such, as sustainability, climate change, natural resource conservation, social justice, equity and inclusion or societal well being. Preference is given to students who are the first in their family to pursue education and those from diverse backgrounds.


4. Vantage One Excellence Award


The Vantage One Excellence Award is granted by UBC Vantage College to students who demonstrate academic performance but do not yet meet the English Language Admission Standard for direct admission to UBC. The award covers a range of expenses including tuition fees and living costs. In addition to achievement applicants should showcase leadership skills, involvement in student activities and community service as well as notable accomplishments in other academic or extracurricular pursuits.

Value & Duration of Award;


The value of the UBC International Scholars Program is determined based on your need. Financial need is assessed by considering factors such, as tuition fees and living expenses while subtracting the contribution that you and your family can make each year. A standard needs assessment relies on the information provided by you and your family regarding your situation.


Your scholarship can be extended for a maximum of three years of studies or until you complete your degree, whichever comes first. This extension is subject, to meeting the requirements set by your faculty maintaining need eligibility and holding a valid Canadian study permit (student visa).


Field of Study Eligibility


The UBC International Scholars Program does not consider the following degrees eligible, for awards; UBC Okanagan Bachelor of Nursing Bachelor of Dental Science in Dental Hygiene, Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science, Bachelor + Master of Management degrees dual degrees, joint degrees between UBC Okanagan and UBC Vancouver and joint degrees with secondary institutions.


Countries Eligibility; All countries are eligible.


Eligibility Criteria;


To be considered for a University of British Columbia Scholarship you must meet the criteria;


1. You should be a student planning to study in Canada on a study permit.


2. You should be. Entering UBC from a recognized school or transferring from your first year at a post secondary college or another university.


3. Your high school graduation should have taken place no earlier than one gap year before the year you are applying for. For instance applicants for the 2024 Winter session must have graduated from school no earlier, than November 2022.


4. You should be applying for your undergraduate degree.


5. You need to demonstrate achievement by achieving all As or an equivalent standard.


6. You must show that you have a level of need that would otherwise hinder your pursuit of a UBC degree.


At UBC they automatically evaluate all students, for the International Major Entrance Scholarships and Outstanding International Student Awards based on merit. These scholarships can provide a value of $35,000 per year. In case this amount is not sufficient to cover your tuition and basic living expenses you have the opportunity to apply for the International Scholars Program. To be considered for admission, at UBC you must fulfill their degree specific requirements as well as meet the English Language Admission Standard.


Here's how you can apply;


1. Take a look, at the application page for the International Scholars Program.


2. Choose the program you wish to pursue and decide on your campus.


Please keep in mind that certain degrees are not eligible for UBC International Scholars Program awards. These include the UBC Okanagan Bachelor of Nursing degree Bachelor of Dental Science in Dental Hygiene, Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science, Bachelor + Master of Management degree dual degrees, degrees between UBC Okanagan and UBC Vancouver and joint degrees with post secondary institutions.


3. To apply for the International Scholars Program you need to be nominated by your school or a non profit organization. Additionally you must submit a reference from a referee.


Make sure to check if your school or non profit is able to nominate you. A single high school, college or university can nominate up to two students for UBC Vancouver (including Vantage College) and one student, for UBC Okanagan. A non profit organization can only nominate a high school student who is involved with their activities. This nomination will count towards the number of nominations allowed from a students school.


Notify your nominator and academic referee about your intention to apply for the International Scholars Program and inform them about the application deadline on November 15th.


Your school counselor or a similar authority figure should be the one to nominate you while your academic reference should come from someone who knows you and your work well such, as your teacher in the field you've chosen to study. 


4. Additionally make sure to gather all the financial information along with any details, about extracurricular activities and awards you may have received.


5. To be considered for the International Scholars Program make sure to submit your application before the deadline, on November 15th.


6. Don't forget to submit your admissions application to UBC by the deadline on December 1st.
