The IMU Breakout Graduate Fellowship Program 2024 offers funded PhD scholarships for students. The scholarship, provided by the International Mathematical Union covers expenses such as tuition fees, accommodation, travel costs and living expenses. The maximum value of the scholarship is USD 10,000 per year.


We encourage mathematicians to nominate motivated and mathematically talented students from developing countries who have a desire to pursue a doctoral degree in a developing country. This includes students, from their home countries as well.


To be considered for the IMU Breakout Graduate Fellowship Program applicants should have a background and a genuine interest, in pursuing a career in mathematics research and teaching.


The aim of the scholarship is to support and educate the generation of mathematicians with hopes that it will have effects on their home countries. The donors along with the International Mathematical Union and The Friends of the International Mathematical Union are committed to this goal.

Scholarship Coverage


Coverage provided by the IMU Breakout Graduate Fellowship Program;


  • Up to USD 10,000 per year can be awarded through the grant.
  • Coverage includes tuition fees.
  • Accommodation expenses are also covered.
  • Travel expenses to the host institution (if different from the home country) will be provided.
  • Basic living expenses will be supported based on the cost of living in the country where doctoral studies are pursued.


Eligibility criteria, for applicants applying to IMU Breakout Graduate Fellowship Program;


To be eligible, for the IMU Breakout Graduate Fellowship Program candidates must meet the following requirements;


1. Proficiency in English is essential.


2. Applications are open to students from all countries around the world.


3. Students cannot apply for the fellowship themselves; they must be nominated by mathematicians, those who have experience mentoring young students.


4. The student must be both a resident and a citizen of a developing country.


5. The student should either have received pre acceptance to join a program in the academic year after selection at a university or research institution based in a developing country or already be enrolled in such a doctoral program.


6. There is no age limit for applicants.


7. Special encouragement is given to nominations of women students.


8. The fellowship will initially be awarded for one year. Can then be renewed annually based on the progress of the awardee until the completion of their doctoral program or, up to four years whichever comes first.

  •  A statement, from your nominator
  •  A copy of your passport (the nominee)
  •  A letter of pre acceptance into a PhD program
  •  Your budget proposal detailing the total expenses requested
  •  The CV of your PhD supervisor
  •  Your research project proposal
  •  Two letters of recommendation (excluding the nominator)
  •  Certified copies of your coursework transcripts (officially stamped by the university) for both your BSc and MSc degrees or equivalents
  •  Your personal CV as a nominee
  •  A letter from you explaining your motivation, research project and future plans
  •  Declarations from both your nominator and PhD supervisor
