To qualify for the ICO Fellowship applicants need to fulfill the criteria;

Language Proficiency; Fluency in English is required.

Research Qualifications;

  • Description of work in the field
  • Comprehensive CV with a detailed list of publications and their impact factors
  • Endorsement from the current program director
  • Confirmation of feasibility from the chosen host university
  • Detailed plan on how research work will be continued during the fellowship
  • Assurance of sustainability including confirmation from the current program director that the applicant can return and resume their position after completing their fellowship.


Basic Requirements;

  • Duration of 12 months for research training.
  • Submission of an application on the ICO website.
  • Applications are accepted for research in sub specialties including Glaucoma, Neuro Ophthalmology, Pediatric Ophthalmology, Retina, Tumours, Uveitis, Dry Eye and Cornea.
  • Successful completion of an exam in ophthalmology is mandatory.
  • Applicants must have a level of fluency in the language used at their chosen fellowship training center.
  • Applicants must be below 40 years old, at the time they apply.
  • The ICO recommends that candidates take one or more ICO exams. 
  • We take this into account when evaluating applications, from this point onward.
  • Applicants from nations with societies that are affiliated with the ICO will be given attention.

How To Apply


To apply for an ICO Fellowship, with the International Council of Ophthalmology please follow these steps;

1. Create an account with ICO if you haven't already done so.


2. Choose the fellowship that corresponds to your country. You will see a list of options.


3. Complete the eligibility check by providing the information to determine your suitability for the selected fellowship.


4. The ICO will review your eligibility based on the information you submitted. You will receive a notification indicating whether you are eligible or not along, with instructions to complete your application if deemed eligible.

7. Once your fellowship application is submitted you'll receive confirmation that it has been received and it will be reviewed by the ICO Fellowship Committee.
