UBCs International Scholars Program offers four categories of awards based on both need and academic merit.

Karen McKellin International Leader of Tomorrow Award
This recognition honors undergraduate students who display outstanding academic achievements and exemplify leadership qualities that promote collaboration, empathy and active listening. It acknowledges students who have made an impact through their involvement, in school and community service projects as well as excelling in other academic or extracurricular pursuits.
Donald A. Wehrung International Student Award
This award acknowledges students from underprivileged or war torn regions who have demonstrated remarkable academic excellence despite challenging circumstances. It aims to provide assistance for these students to pursue university education. The recipients of this award should exhibit leadership potential and a strong dedication to creating an impact within their communities.
International Impact Award
This award is granted to students who have shown leadership abilities along with a commitment towards finding solutions for sustainability and climate change conservation and management of resources, social justice, equity and inclusion or societal health and wellness. Priority is given to first generation learners and those from backgrounds.
Vantage One Excellence Award
UBC Vantage College offers this award to international students who have not yet met the English Language Admission Standard for direct admission to UBC. The value of the awards varies up, to covering the cost of the students program and living expenses.
In order to be eligible, for the University of British Columbia Scholarship students are expected to showcase their leadership abilities, participation in student affairs and community service well as notable accomplishments, in academic or extracurricular activities.
Scholarship Requirements;
To be eligible, for the University of British Columbia Scholarship you need to meet the criteria;
1. You should be a student planning to study in Canada with a Canadian study permit.
2. You should either be entering UBC directly from a recognized school. Transferring after completing your first year at a post secondary college or another university.
3. Your high school graduation should have taken place no earlier than one year before the year you are applying for. For instance if you are applying for the 2024 Winter session your high school graduation should not have been before November 2022.
4. This scholarship is applicable for your undergraduate degree.
5. It is essential to exhibit performance aiming for straight A grades or an equivalent standard.
6. Financial need can also play a role in determining eligibility for this scholarship program. UBC assesses all students automatically for the merit based International Major Entrance Scholarships and Outstanding International Student Awards scholarships, with a value of $35,000, per year combined. However if this amount does not cover your tuition fees and basic living expenses adequately you can apply separately for the International Scholars Program.
7. In order to gain admission, to UBC you need to fulfill their admission requirements, which include specific prerequisites, for your desired degree well as meeting the English Language Admission Standard.
Scholarship Duration and Reward
When it comes to the duration and reward of the UBC International Scholars Program, the value of the scholarship is determined based on your need. This need is calculated by considering your expenses, for tuition, fees and living costs and subtracting the amount that you and your family can contribute annually. A standard assessment is conducted using the information provided by you and your family.
Your scholarship can potentially be extended for, up to three years of studies or until you complete your degree, whichever comes first. To qualify for the extension you need to maintain performance in your faculty continue to exhibit financial need and hold a valid Canadian study permit (student visa).
Application Process.
1. Take a look at the application page for the International Scholars Program.
2. Decide on your desired program and campus preference.
- Please note that certain degrees are not eligible for UBC International Scholars Program awards. These include UBC Okanagans Bachelor of Nursing degree Bachelor of Dental Science in Dental Hygiene, Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science, Bachelor + Master of Management degree dual degrees, degrees between UBC Okanagan and UBC Vancouver well as joint degrees with other post secondary institutions.
3. In order to apply for the International Scholars Program you must be nominated by your school or a non profit organization. Additionally you need to provide a reference from a referee.
- Ensure that your school or non profit is eligible to nominate you. Each high school, college or university can nominate up to two students for UBC Vancouver (including Vantage College) and one student, for UBC Okanagan. A non profit organization can only put forward a high school student, for nomination if they have an involvement, with the organization. This nomination will be included in the count of nominations allowed from that students school.
- Please inform your nominator and academic referee about your intention to apply for the International Scholars Program and make sure they are aware of the application deadline, which's November 15. Your nominator should be someone, like your school counselor while your academic referee should be a person who knows you well and is familiar with your work, such as your teacher in the field you wish to study.
